First thing we do is to cut a hole in the side of the cauldron 5"
diameter. A jig saw makes it easy without risk of a knife slipping on the
plastic and cutting the well intentioned child victimizer. Then drill about 16
holes around the outside of the hole near the edge. Now using hot glue we attach
the piece of double knit fabric over the hole and small holes. Make sure the
fabric is stretched very tight.
We then place our zip ties into two holes at a time and zip tie the fabric
in place. This is very important, as the fabric will be going through quite a
bit of abuse and without the ties I don't believe it would remain in place. Cut
off the excess fabric and then cut an X in the center about 2 3/4" wide and
high. Next we need to place our Fake Arm under the cauldron where your left hand
would normally be if you were supporting it below. It is important that it is
very visible to the TOTs to complete the illusion. Once you have this place
determined, drill four holes in the bottom of the cauldron above the hand and
corresponding holes in the palm of the hand. Now zip tie the hand in place with
two ties.
We are close to completion already but will need to attach the top 2"
of a sock like you see above to the end of the sleeve on your Fake Arm. This
gives you a way to hold the arm up tight underneath the cauldron in case your
little TOTs look up your sleeve.
Make sure the slits you put in the fabric are just enough to allow your arm
to slide inside and not enough to allow candy to drop out of from the
edges. About 9" or so up from the bottom of the sleeve of your shirt or robe,
make another slit for your arm to go though that will allow you to slide just
your arm into the cauldron. You will be putting your arm through the sock sewn
to the top of the fake arm, then through the slit in the sleeve and finally
through the fabric into the cauldron. Finally, just pull the lower section of
sleeve down to the wrist of the fake hand.
So now using your right hand to hold the rear top edge of the cauldron and
the fake hand completing the picture below, you are ready to give your little
goblins a much more thrilling treat than any old Snicker's bar!
(Note from 2003; In the years now since I made this cauldron, there
hasn't been a single person who had any clue that this wasn't the real deal. All
victims young and not so young gladly reached their hand inside for the candy,
only to feel the unmistakable feeling of a human hand reach up to greet
them.)
